Mrs. June Faye Thornes, 81, wife of the late Herbert Dennis Thornes and a resident of Hopeton, passed away Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024. Born Sept. 10, 1943, in Gargatha and reared in Hopeton, she was the daughter of the late Prentiss James Ayres Sr. and Leila Mall Taylor Ayres.
For more than two decades Faye worked at the former R&G Shirt Factory in Parksley but found her true calling as a teacher’s aide at Onley Preschool. Over the years, Faye brought joy to the lives of countless children just as they did to hers. Raised in a Christian home, she was a longtime member or St. Thomas United Methodist Church. Faye adored her family and shared a special bond with her granddaughters.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Lynn Gagliardi and her husband, Vince, of Melfa; brother, Kenneth Ayres and his wife, Beverly, of Bloxom; granddaughters, Alisha Leslie (Ryne) and Samantha Gagliardi; sisters-in-law, Linda Ayres, Betty Lou Jones (Carlisle), and Sandra Richardson (Troy); brothers-in-law, Quinn Thornes (Georgie) and Keith Thornes (Chantel); and several nieces, nephews, and their families.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Prentiss James Ayres Jr., and sisters, Dorothy Taylor and husband, Tommy, and Jeanette Thornes and husband, Johnny.
Funeral services were conducted from the chapel of the Williams-Parksley Funeral Home on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. George King officiating. Private interment was held at the Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Onancock.
