Mrs. Barbara H. Kellam, 84, wife of the late Lucius F. Kellam and formerly of Nassawadox, passed away Friday, Oct. 18, 2024, at Commonwealth Senior Living at the Eastern Shore.
A native of Chestertown, Md., she was the daughter of the late Terry J. Higbee and the late Rebecca Eder Higbee. Barbara attended church from early childhood into her early twenties and later returned to church at the age of 37, when she was saved. She was a member of Exmore Baptist Church.
She had a long working career as a secretary/bookkeeper, having worked at General Electric Company in Lynchburg for six years, Bayshore Concrete Products in Cape Charles for 14 years, and Northampton and Accomack county public schools for 25 years, after which time she retired. She went back to work as a part-time bookkeeper at the Lighthouse Ministries for 10 and a half years, retiring once again at the age of 77.
She is survived by a daughter, Jeannie Kellam Landon and her husband, Stevan, of Raeford, N.C.; a granddaughter, Ruth Ann Fossier (whom she raised and loved as a daughter) and her husband, Bryant, of Kingsland, Ga.; a granddaughter, Raven Landon; six great-grandchildren, Emma Grace Kellam, Ryder Hurley, Sayler Hurley, and Mila Hurley, Jolene Figueroa, and Lucie Fossier; a brother, Ira Higbee, and his wife, Rita, of Painter; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special best friend since 1966, Nanette Crumb Newell and her husband, Luis, of Tucson, Ariz. Having been a lover of cats, she always had one or two all the years of her life. She leaves behind Maisey. She was predeceased by a grandson, Nathan Joshua Landon and a half brother, John C. Higbee.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 2 p.m., at Doughty Funeral Home with the Rev. Jonathan Carpenter officiating. Interment followed in Belle Haven Cemetery. Family joined friends at Doughty Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 21.
