Mrs. Barbara Bunting, 82, of Chincoteague, passed into the arms of the Lord on October 4, 2024, while surrounded by her loving family after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Barbara was born on July 1, 1942, to John B. and Mildred Gordy in Temperanceville.

After graduating from Atlantic High School in 1960, she married the love of her life in October 1960 and moved to Chincoteague, where she began to raise her family. Barbara’s passion was her family and her home. Spending time with her family was her greatest joy. Barbara worked at Chincoteague High School for 30 years, starting in the library and then becoming secretary to the principal. Barbara ran the school office as she did her home — like a well-oiled machine. Barbara was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Chincoteague.

Barbara is survived by her husband of 64 years, Billy Ray Bunting; daughters, Brenda Bernstein (Bryan), of Hebron, Md., and Teresa McCain (Bill), of Salisbury, Md.; grandchildren, Jeremy Bernstein, Rachel Forte (Eric), and Caitlin McCain (Connor); great-grandchildren Tucker and Layton Forte; sister, Peggy Palmer (Bruce), and brother, James Gordy. Barbara is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at Union Baptist Church in Chincoteague, at 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 7, with the Rev. Kevin Eley officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 691, Chincoteague Island, VA 23336.

Services were entrusted to Salyer Funeral Home, Inc. on Chincoteague Island.  Condolences may be made online at www.salyerfh.com
