Mrs. Jean Elizabeth Leggett Wallace, 75, of Jamesville, formerly of Chic’s Beach, passed away peacefully on Friday, Aug. 23, 2024. She was born on Jan. 10, 1949, in Martin County, N.C., to the late John William Leggett Sr. and the late Mattie Virginia Leggett.
Jean’s early years were spent in Bear Grass, N.C., before she moved to Norfolk, where she spent most of her childhood and adult life. The youngest of seven children, Jean was the last surviving sibling and carried the legacy of her North Carolina roots with grace and resilience.
Jean found joy in taking care of her home and her beloved husband, Tom Wallace. Over their 40-plus years of marriage, Jean and Tom shared countless adventures, particularly cherishing their travels to Florida and any place by the water. The couple spent the majority of their life together in Chic’s Beach, finding happiness and peace in the simple pleasure of being near the ocean.
They eventually retired to the serene Eastern Shore of Virginia, where they made a home on a beautiful creek off the Chesapeake Bay. The Wallaces never missed a chance to admire a sunset together, and true to his nature, Tom was by Jean’s side during her very last sunset.
Jean will be remembered for her kind spirit, her love for travel, and her deep appreciation for the outdoors. Above all, she will be lovingly remembered by those who knew her best — her dear husband and her family.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Tommy Lee Wallace, of Jamesville; stepdaughter, Laura “Niki” Infinger, of North Palm Beach, Fla.; granddaughter, Taylor Lohman, of Tacoma, Wash.; sister-in-law, Odella Leggett, of New Hope, N.C.; longtime caregiver, Tina Beach; and several nieces and nephews.
Jean was predeceased by her parents, John and Mattie Leggett; and siblings, John W. Leggett Jr., William S. Fulford, Eddie R. Fulford, Louise L. Stancill, Willie F. Bullock, and Julia L. Hathaway.
Per her requests, no public service will be held. Jean will be laid to rest with her family in the Leggett Family Cemetery in Bear Grass.
