Mr. Scott Leonard “Cheech” Leager, 49, of Horntown, passed away at his home in Trail’s End on Tuesday, July 9, 2024. He was born June 12, 1975, in Chestertown, Md. He moved to Chincoteague Island as a baby, and from then on, he was an island boy through and through. Everything he did was near the water; from patent-tong clamming to jamming to classic rock, he always stayed close to the peaceful shores of the Atlantic and the Chesapeake.

Fate brought Scott to the love of his life, Christy, on Chincoteague, 17 years ago. A quick stop at Corner Mart for a Pepsi led to meeting the girl who would stay by his side until the very end, and together, they built a beautiful life.

Known as “Cheech” to most of his friends, Scott had an eclectic taste in music, loving Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Billy Joel, Patsy Cline, and of course, Johnny, Hank, and Waylon. Evenings often found Cheech and Christy engrossed in historical dramas, enjoying their quiet moments together. A simple man with the kindest heart, Cheech had a deep affection for animals, especially his pets.

Loyal and generous, he was the type of friend who would give you the shirt off his back. Cheech could fix just about anything, and before his career as a waterman, he was a master technician mechanic and a trucker. It will never be the same without him here, but a little piece of him will live on with every grain of sand and every wave that crashes on the beach.

Scott is survived by the love of his life, Christy Outten Leager, of Horntown; his father, Leonard Nathaniel Leager, of Horntown; brother, Mark Smith (Renea Smith), of Baltimore; niece, Stephanie Smith, of Baltimore; uncle Leon and aunt Kathy Leager, of Ellendale; nephews, Bryan and Daniel Outten, of Girdletree, Md.; and extended family, Cindy Outten and Rhonda Whitehead, of Girdletree.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
