Mrs. Linda Hunter Fletcher, 77, of Wallops Island, passed away at Commonwealth Senior Living on the Eastern Shore in Onancock on Saturday, June 15, 2024. Born May 25, 1947, she was the oldest daughter of the late James Jerome Hunter and the late Margaret Anne Hunter.

Linda was proud to be the first grandchild in her family, earning her the honor of naming her grandparents, thus creating the beloved name “Baba,” which her cousins and siblings fondly adopted. A well-behaved, kind, and studious young lady, Linda was an avid reader and a straight-A student, known for her academic prowess.

Linda graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English from Longwood College in 1969 and earned her master’s degree in education from Old Dominion University in 1977. She began her teaching career in 1969 in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. After meeting her husband, Donald Fletcher III, she moved back to the Eastern Shore and taught at Parksley Middle School. She spent a total of 31 years teaching in the classrooms of Accomack County, with 19 of those years at Arcadia High School, inspiring countless students with her dedication and passion for learning.

Linda had many passions, including scrapbooking, enjoying Diet Cokes, and frequenting Sonic.

She loved her church family at Atlantic Baptist Church, where she was a devoted Christian and found great joy in her faith and community. Her most important role in life was as a mother to her son, Donald. Despite his lifelong health problems, Linda was his dedicated caregiver and even donated a kidney to him. His passing a few years ago was a profound loss for her.

Linda is survived by her sister, Margaret “Peg” Hunter Baldwin (Kirk); cousins, William T. McCready III (Donna), Scott Hunter (Maria), Timothy A. McCready, and Glenn Hunter (Jeanne); nephew, Hunter Baldwin (Cassie); and great-nephew, Jack Baldwin.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Margaret Hunter; husband, Donald Frank Fletcher III; and son, Donald Frank Fletcher IV.

A memorial service is being planned for August and will be announced on the funeral home website once available.
