Mr. William Duke Matthews, better known as “Dukie,” 80, of Exmore, passed away at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital on Thursday, May 9, 2024. He was the son of the late Jesse Alva Matthews, better known as “Stumpy,” and the late Estelle Ross Matthews.

Many of the folks on the Shore will remember Dukie with his friendly smile, a fun conversation, a wave, and a wink.  Whether he was helping you at his Radio Shack store, getting you a new appliance at his store “The Company” in Painter, riding the rails on the Eastern Shore Rail, cutting your grass, working at the convenience center, or stopping for a chat in town or out on a country road, he would figure out what you needed, figure out something for you, or at least leave you with a funny memory or story.

He was one of a kind, a true character, big hearted, and would always help or find someone who could. Selfless to the end, he cared about everyone and always wanted to know how you and your family were doing.

He was a member of Exmore Moose Lodge #683, Broadwater Lodge #71, and Franktown United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, V. Rita Matthews, whom he adored; his children, Christopher Lee Matthews (Terri), Tamy M. Medalis (Nick), Charles W. Matthews, better known as “Chip,” and Courtney M. Wilkins; a brother, Rick Lee Matthews (Gwen), of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a sister, Barbara M. Thomas, of Eastville;  grandchildren, Alden and Breckin Medalis, Madison and John Wilkins, Shepherd Matthews, Logan Rose (Stephanie) and Spencer Rose; and a nephew, Jason Matthews (Katie), of Boone, N.C, and his faithful companion, Knocker, who accompanied him almost everywhere and anywhere.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 315, Onancock, VA 23417 or to the charity of one’s choice.

A celebration of life will be held at The Worship Center at Camp Occohannock on the Bay, 9403 Camp Lane, Belle Haven, VA 23306 on Saturday, July 27, at 2 p.m.
