Woman, 95, found dead on shoreline in Red Bank community near Melfa

An Accomack County woman was found dead on Sunday, March 24, on a shoreline off Revell Lane, in the Red Bank community near Melfa.

The body of Gretchen P. Ayres, 95, of Onancock, was found near a private dock at a Revell Lane property, Sheriff Todd Wessells said.

Wessells said deputies arrived to a call and found an unresponsive female along the shoreline. The female was pronounced dead by first responders at the scene.

The body has been transported to the Norfolk Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death, Wessells said.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the incident is accidental, he said.

The Accomack County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Virginia Marine Resource Commission, Onancock Volunteer Fire Department, and the Accomack County Department of Public Safety.
