Mrs. Helen Gene Johnson, 80, of Mears, wife of the late Eugene W. Johnson Jr., passed away on Feb. 13, 2024, in Newport News.

Born on March 5, 1943, on Tangier Island, she was the daughter of the late Willie Thomas Parks and Ella Louise Parks. Helen worked for Accomack County Public Schools as a bus driver for 33 years. She was a dedicated member of the Kingdom Hall – Jehovah’s Witnesses Church in Gargatha and she was endlessly devoted to her family.

Helen is survived by three daughters, Tammy K. McCullough and husband, Mike, of Accomac, Kimberly L. Midgett and husband, Kenneth, of Bloxom, and Teresa E. Smith, of New Church; a son, Eugene W. Johnson III and wife, Connie, of Bloxom; 11 grandchildren, William Cox, Christina Taylor, Christal Johnson, Rhonda Johnson, Jesse West, Aaleah Midgett, Justin Sanders, Cody Sanders, Michael McCullough III, Kenneth McCullough, and Alex McCullough; 21 great-grandchildren; a sister, Debbie Taylor; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Other than her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Elizabeth B. Curtis, Willie F. Parks, Danny Parks, and Betty Rose “Sis” Evans.

Funeral services will be private.

Arrangements are by the Thornton Funeral Home in Parksley.
