Mrs. Harriet Scott Brockenbrough, 94, widow of Benjamin Willard Brockenbrough Jr., a resident of Covenant Woods in Mechanicsville, passed away on June 26, 2023, at Covenant Woods.

Born July 30, 1928, at Chatham Farm in Bridgetown, she was the daughter of the late James Holland Scott and the late Sara Temple Segar Scott. After graduating from Mary Washington College in 1949, she moved to Richmond, where she taught chemistry for five years at the old Glen Allen High School and Hermitage High School in Henrico County. She substituted for many years at Lee-Davis High School in Hanover County.

Mrs. Brockenbrough enjoyed designing and sewing festival flags, knitting, her book club, volunteering, and extensive travel with her husband.

She was a long-time member of St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, where she organized and directed the Food Pantry, networking with other churches in the Ginter Park area before moving to St. Paul’s Church at Hanover Courthouse.

She was a volunteer for 25 years at Virginia Rehabilitation for the Blind and Vision Impaired and a founding member and treasurer of their Volunteer Council. On moving to Covenant Woods, she continued to enjoy volunteering and served on several committees as well as the Resident Council.  As a member of the Conservation Taskforce, she was active in establishing the recycling program in 2008.  She especially enjoyed semi-annual “sleepovers” with five special friends on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, all 1945 graduates of Northampton High School.

Survivors include four sons, Benjamin W. Brockenbrough III (Robin), of Montpelier, Dr. James Scott Brockenbrough (Dr. Jennifer Shook), of Tucson, Ariz., Allan Brockenbrough II (Paula), of Elmont, and Thomas W. Brockenbrough; and a sister-in-law, Jean Tankard Scott, of Onancock.  She is also survived by two grandchildren, Eamon, of Melbourne, Australia, and Emily, of Lisbon, Portugal; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her loving husband of 54 years and her parents, Mrs. Brockenbrough was predeceased by her sister, Martha Scott Rogers; brother, James Holland Scott Jr.; and brothers-in-law, Spencer McMath Rogers, Allan Brockenbrough, and Henry W. Brockenbrough.

A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Church in Hanover Courthouse on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2023, at 2 p.m. A reception will follow the service at Hanover Tavern. A graveside service will be conducted Friday, Sept. 8, 2023, at 2 p.m., at Hungar’s Episcopal Church in Machipongo, with the Rev. Janet Wheelock officiating.
