Mr. Damon Derrick Matthews, 62, husband of Cynthia Ellen Button-Matthews and a resident of Cashville, passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2023, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Born in Norfolk on May 15, 1961, he was the son of Penny Hawkins Matthews, of Cashville, and the late John David “Butch” Matthews Jr.

Following high school, Damon attended Virginia Tech before he became owner-operator of Virginia Beach Irrigation, successfully running his business for over 40 years.

Damon grew up on the Eastern Shore, spending as much time as he could fishing, hunting, and crabbing with his lifelong friend, Jeffrey S. Diggs, and exploring the rich history of the area that he so loved. In 2013 he finally realized his lifelong dream of moving back to the Shore and relocated his family to Onancock, where they have lived since.

A faithful servant of the Lord, Damon was a devoted member and deacon at Broadway Baptist Church. He cared deeply for his church family and community and was always first to make sure the ill and elderly were taken care of during their time of need.

Along with his wife of 24 years, Damon leaves to cherish his memory his children, Amber Matthews (Alex), of Chesapeake, Kristin Riddick (Coley), of Virginia Beach, and Emily Faith Matthews, of Cashville; brother, David E. “Butch” Matthews (Debbie), of Virginia Beach; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Waue of Ohio; grandchildren, William Matthews, Natalie and Nathan Waue, and Charlotte and Ella Riddick. He is survived and deeply missed by his mother, Penny Hawkins Matthews. He is also survived by his dedicated VBI crew, Bucky, Chris, Rico, and Joe, all of whom he thought of like family.

Damon was predeceased by his father, John David “Butch” Matthews, and his son, David Waue.

Services are scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 19, 2023, at 11 a.m., at Broadway Baptist Church, Onancock.
