Mr. Charles David Byrd was the son of a carpenter, Broadus Fitch Byrd, and Lola Taylor Byrd. He was the older brother of Martha Byrd Roe. He graduated from Pocomoke High School in 1949 and served in the Air Force for a few years, where he learned to be a mechanic.
In 1963 he married Hilda Grace Ross and together they had two daughters. After Hilda passed he married Jane Tyre. He spent most of his life as a small engine repairman and even after he retired from MacMillan Brothers in Salisbury, he continued to work on equipment in his backyard well into his 80s.
Charles believed in God and was passionate about photography. He enjoyed dark chocolate, bananas, and vanilla ice cream. He loved family pets, gardening, and reading local newspapers. He was the head of the Byrd Family Reunion that was held annually at Milburn Landing until COVID-19.
He is survived by his daughters, Sandi Byrd and Wendy Marshall and her husband, Allen; and his grandchildren, Brooks Marshall, Autumn Marshall Epler and her husband, Jonathan, Kaitlyn Ennis, and Harley Marshall. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Linda Bray, Tim Still, Kaye Northam, Gary Northam, and Lila O’Connor, and many stepgrandchildren.
His family is eternally grateful to Marie, Ty, Shaneka and all the other wonderful people at Intrepid for their help the past two and a half years.
There will be a graveside service Friday, Aug. 4, at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Cemetery in Pocomoke City. Family and friends are welcome. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at http://act.alz.org/goto/Charles or simply consider fixing something for someone who needs your help.
