Mrs. Ruth Parks Crockett, wife of the late William Louis Crockett and longtime resident of Onley, passed away Friday, July 21, 2023, at the age of 98. Born April 21, 1925, on Tangier Island, Ruth was the only child of the late Eddie G. Parks and the late Ida Mae Pruitt Parks.
Following graduation from Tangier Combined School, Ruth attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, earning a bachelor’s degree in education. Over the next 40 years, Ruth made an impact on the lives of countless children as an elementary school teacher, sharing her passion for learning in several districts throughout North Carolina, Maryland, Delaware, and the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
Having been raised in a Christian home and community, she remained a devoted servant of the Lord throughout her life and was a longtime member of Drummondtown United Methodist Church. Often on the move and always with a smile, Ruth enjoyed time spent with family, spoiling her grandchildren, volunteering at church, and shopping, and she looked forward to afternoons riding around with friends.
Ruth Crockett led by example through her unwavering faith, her role as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and her enthusiasm as an educator. Her life was a true gift to all who knew and loved her, and she will be greatly missed.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her son, William E. “Eddie” Crockett and his wife, June, of Onley; grandchildren, Keith E. Crockett, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and Kara Crockett Cadena and her husband, Christopher, of Melfa; great-grandchildren, Grayson and Savannah Cadena; and nieces, Darlene, Jessie, and Vickie, as well as their families.
In addition to her husband and parents, Ruth was predeceased by her great-granddaughter, Emmeline June Cadena and niece, Wendy.
Funeral services were conducted from the graveside at the Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Onancock on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at 2 p.m., with Mr. George Fulk officiating.
