An Exmore man has announced his candidacy for the Northampton County School Board.

Joe Andrews has announced his candidacy for the at-large seat on the Northampton County School Board.

Andrews and his wife, Claudia, both Virginia natives, moved to Exmore in 2019 after “falling in love with the area during frequent camping and vacation trips to the Eastern Shore for many years,” he said.

Andrews made the decision to enter the race to bring his experience and expertise in business management to the operation of the Northampton County schools.

Recently retired, Andrews has been the director of an industrial equipment sales and service organization for the past five years, with prior service as a state employee and Northrop Grumman Corp.

“Student achievement compared to other Commonwealth of Virginia districts has been well below par at the Northampton County schools, even prior to the pandemic, with Northampton County schools scoring close to last in all measured subject areas out of the 133 districts reporting,” he said.

Andrews would like to focus efforts on providing a learning environment for students while ensuring academic rigor in fundamentals, partnering with parents to strengthen and promote learning, recruiting quality teaching staff and developing creative and effective incentive packages to reward and retain the best and the brightest in our community.

“No community can thrive and grow without a quality school system that educates its children to be active and contributing members of that community. The citizens and children of the Northampton County community deserve that, and the future of the county depends on it.”

Andrews can be contacted via his Joe Andrews for School Board Facebook page or via email at [email protected].

The Eastern Shore Post will print at no cost candidate announcements for county or state elections. The announcements should be no more than 450 words, are subject to editing, and may include a head-and-shoulders photograph. Free announcements will not be accepted after Oct. 1. Email announcements to [email protected].
