A truck ripped through the guardrail of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and plunged into the waters below on the afternoon of Thursday, June 22, snarling northbound traffic and prompting a search for the truck’s driver.
Social media photographs posted by drivers showed a missing swath of guardrail.
The truck apparently dove into the waters between the northbound and southbound spans.
WBOC-TV of Salisbury, Md., reported that the crash happened just before 2 p.m.
The bridge-tunnel sent an understated message on Twitter at 3:46 p.m., calling it only an “accident on CBBT northbound.”
“Expect major delays,” the Twitter message read.
One of the two northbound lanes is closed to drivers.
