Mr. Vernon Allen Lewis, 78, husband of the late Pauline Widgeon Lewis and a resident of Cheriton, passed away Sunday, May 21, 2023, at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital in Onancock. A native of Cheriton, he was the son of the late Edward H. Lewis and the late Florence E. Richardson Lewis. He was a United States Navy veteran, worked on clam boats out of Cape Charles, and was a firefighter in Connecticut, a railroad brakeman in D.C., a charter boat captain, and a contractor. Vernon was a member of Cherrystone Aquaculture Co-op and retired from aquaculture farming.
He is survived by a son, Greg Hardesty of Cheriton; a brother, Samuel Lewis of Ocala, Fla.; a sister, Sylvia Steffens of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Randolph Widgeon of Willis Wharf; a sister-in-law, Fannie Belote of Quinby; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services with military honors will be conducted Friday, May 26, 2023, at 2 p.m. at Cape Charles Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Charles Peterson and Mr. Barry Downing officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cheriton Baptist Church, P.O. Box 227, Cheriton, VA 23316.
