Dr. Arthur Treherne Carter, M.D., passed away on April 5, 2023. He was born in the family home on June 26, 1946, in Franktown. Arthur attended a Catholic missionary elementary school in Tuskegee, Ala., completed high school at a Catholic preparatory boarding school in York County, Pa., graduated from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., majoring in biology with a minor in philosophy, obtained a doctorate in medicine from the University of Cincinnati, and completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Norfolk General Hospital Eastern Virginia Medical School.

A board-certified obstetrician gynecologist, he closed his Norfolk practice in 1983 to open his medical office in Nassawadox, where he resided until his death. Over the duration of his medical career, Arthur delivered more than 6,000 babies.

In the 1980s, Arthur was elected to serve two terms on the Northampton County Board of Supervisors. He cofounded Virginia Eastern Shore Economic Empowerment & Housing Corporation (VESEEHC) and established the local chapter of Coming to the Table, a national organization that invites descendants of the enslaved and enslavers to meet, talk, and share the pain that is experienced by both for a communal healing.

A 2 p.m. service is scheduled for April 15, at Bethel Baptist Church in Franktown. Masks are required. Family will arrive 30 minutes prior, and there will be no social gathering afterwards due to COVID-19. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in his memory to VESEEHC or a charity of your choice.

He is survived by his college sweetheart and wife of over 53 years, Marsha Dunning Carter, Esq.; daughters, Malaika Carter Barlow, Esq. (Thomas), and Kobi Carter Eidman (Richard); nieces, nephew, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Peter J. Carter, M.D. of Franktown; mother, Rosabell Kellar Carter Lester, R.N., of Abbeville, S.C., and older half-brother Rev. Peter J. Carter Jr.

The family thanks John O Morris Funeral Home of Nassawadox for attending to all the arrangements.
