Mr. Edward Victor “Cap’n Eddie” Karmilovich, 77, husband of Shirley Augustine “Sweet Shirley” Karmilovich and a resident of Machipongo, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2023, at Sentara Heart Hospital in Norfolk. A native of Hanover Township, Pa., he was the son of the late Jacob Karmilovich and the late Veronica Lipisco Karmilovich. He graduated from Kings’ College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., was a retired manager for the Department of Environmental Protection and a member of St. Charles Catholic Church.
In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by two sisters, Carol Schultz and Lilli McManus; two brothers, Stanley Karmilovich and James Karmilovich; and many wonderful family members and friends.
It had always been his dream to live on the water and have his boat, even though it never left his yard, and his dock, which never saw his boat; but the seagulls enjoyed it. He promised his wife she would love the water, even though she never learned to swim and was fearful of the water.
The golf pro at Bay Creek Resort in Cape Charles introduced him to the men’s Bay Creek prayer group, and it was love at first meet. They were such a joy. They played three days a week, and he couldn’t wait to meet up with them. Even though he developed Parkinson’s disease seven years ago, he enjoyed golfing with them just as much as ever.
The local Y.M.C.A. offered a Parkinson’s disease exercise class two days a week, a small group of lovely people taught by a wonderful caring woman. He attended that class as well as a monthly Parkinson’s support group meeting run by a wonderful caring couple.
For 14 years, his wife’s dear, wonderful “Polish prince” lived his dream. She felt so blessed to be his wife. He was and will remain the love of her life, her joy. Her heart is broken and yet she takes solace in her faith and knowing that he is at peace and in the arms of our Lord. He is reunited with his mom, dad, family, and friends who have gone before him. Enjoy every minute of every day, stay healthy, and play the “Beer Barrel Polka” in his honor, for he loved that song.
A celebration of life service will be conducted Friday, Feb. 17, 2023, at 11 a.m., at St. Charles Catholic Church, with Father J. Michael Breslin officiating. Inurnment will follow in St. Charles Borromeo Memorial Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Heart Association, 20 Northpointe Parkway, #130, Amherst, NY 14228; Parkinson’s Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131; or St. Charles Catholic Church, 545 Randolph Avenue, Cape Charles, VA 23310.
