Mrs. Lois Ballard Stevens, 61, wife of Larry Stevens and mother of Nicole Stevens Cummings, passed away at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center (VCU) in Richmond, on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2022. A lifelong resident of Cape Charles, she was the daughter of the late Marguerite “Maggie” Ballard and the late Dale Ballard Sr.
She graduated from Cape Charles High School in 1980 and never met a job she couldn’t do. She worked as a dispatcher for Northampton County Sheriff’s Department in the mid-’90s and early ’00s. She was also a rural paper carrier for The Virginian-Pilot until her health prevented it.
In addition to her loving husband and daughter, she is survived by her brothers, Dale Ballard Jr. and wife, Dotty, and Bruce Ballard and wife, Claudia. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and those she considered her children in all but blood.
She had a great love for her animals and is sorely missed by all her fur babies, especially her bulldog, Ash. She was a devoted watcher of the Chicago series on TV, an avid reader, enjoyed playing bingo, and being with those she loved.
A graveside service was conducted Saturday, Oct. 29, 2022, at 2 p.m., at Cape Charles Cemetery, with the Rev. Jeff Conrow officiating. Memorials may be made to SPCA Eastern Shore Inc., P.O. Box 164, Onley, VA 23418.
The family wishes to express their thanks to Cape Charles Rescue Squad, the staff of Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital, and the staff at VCU.
