Mr. John David “Butch” Matthews Jr., 83, husband of Penny Hawkins Matthews and a resident of Cashville, formerly of Virginia Beach, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Sunday, Aug. 21, 2022.

Born Feb. 19, 1939, in Norfolk, he was the son of John D. Matthews Sr. and Myrtle Brinn Matthews. Butch was the previous owner and operator of Virginia Beach Printing and Stationery Company, which he and his wife ran for many years. He was a member of Broadway Baptist Church in Cashville, and throughout his life was active in several groups, clubs, and professional associations.

In addition to his wife, survivors include his two sons, David E. “Butch” Matthews and his wife, Debbie, of Virginia Beach, and Damon D. Matthews and his wife, Cynthia, of Cashville; three grandchildren, Amber Matthews, Kristin Riddick and her husband, Coley, and Emily Matthews; five great-grandchildren, William Matthews, Nathan Waue, Natalie Waue, Charlotte Riddick, and Ella Riddick; and five nieces and nephews, and their families. In addition to his parents, Butch was predeceased by a grandson, David Waue.

A service to celebrate Butch’s life will be held at Broadway Baptist Church in the future, with information announced when planned.
