Lightning Strike Damages Church Steeple

Staff Report — A lightning strike Sunday afternoon damaged the steeple of Broadway Baptist Church in Cashville.

Firefighters from Onancock, Melfa, Tasley, Wachapregue, and Painter were dispatched at around 1:29 p.m. to the church for a report of a working fire.

Fire was showing from the steeple when Onancock’s chief arrived on the scene.
Onancock Volunteer Fire Department’s ladder 9 truck, among other equipment, was used to attack the flames, according to a Facebook post from OVFD.

The fire was contained to the steeple, with minimal damage to the church interior, according to the post.

One firefighter was injured at the scene and received medical attention.
