Mr. Leon Smith, 91, of Painter, departed this life Saturday, June 4, 2022, at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital in Onancock.

Born in Painter, he was the beloved son of the late Mildred Smith Lofland and the late John L. Collins. He was affectionately known as “Lee” or “Ice Man” by his family and friends. Before graduating, he was drafted in the U.S. Marine Corps. Lee’s skills were quickly recognized as he rose to the ranks of staff sergeant and the leader of his platoon. After serving eight years, he was honorably discharged on June 24, 1952.

On Aug. 13, 1958, he was joined in Holy matrimony to his soul mate, Maggie Helen Turner.

He was a faithful member of Shiloh Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon until his demise.

Although he was a jack of all trades, Leon’s main career was at the Copes Ice Corporation where he worked for 45 years.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 11, 2022, at Shiloh Baptist Church, Painter, with the Rev. Jesse E. Thomas officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Leon leaves to rejoice in his homegoing and to share cherished loving memories: his devoted wife, Maggie Helen; one son, Richard Kellam Jr; niece of the home, C. Reneta Major; furry daughter, Rosie; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Virginia Barkley and Karen Smith; one brother, Clifton Collins; daughter-in-law, Sadie Kellam; and a host of nieces, nephews, godchildren, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
