Ponies Softball Team Takes Second in Regional Championship

The Lady Ponies softball team took on the Rappahannock Raiders in the Class 1 Regional Championship Game at home Thursday, June 2. Chincoteague fell to a strong Rappahannock team in extra innings with a final score 5-4. 

Alex McComb took the loss for the Ponies. McComb allowed nine hits and five runs in eight innings of work, striking out eight and walking zero.

Offensively, Chincoteague was led by senior Emma Jackson as she went one for three with two RBIs and a home run in the second inning. McComb recorded a double in the game, while Sara Godwin and Caity Kerchner each added a hit for the Ponies.  

Chincoteague earned a bid into the state tournament and traveled to Riverheads High School for the Class 1 State Quarterfinals. The Ponies fell to Riverheads 10-0, concluding their season as top eight in Class 1 of the state. Chincoteague held a final 2022 season record of 16-2, a season that included an impressive undefeated regular season and an Eastern Shore District title.
