Yellow Jackets Split Wins Against Surry County Cougars

The Northampton Yellow Jackets varsity softball team hosted Surry County High School Monday, April 4. The Yellow Jackets won 14-4. 

The Yellow Jackets built an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. In the third inning, Surry scored three runs  and took the lead. A double by Marlena Dzurko and a ground ball by Hannah Locklear put the Yellow Jackets back on top 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning. In the sixth inning, the Yellow Jackets’ offense kicked it into high gear and scored nine runs to close out the game.

Jillian Spence pitched the entire game, allowing six hits, walking three batters and striking out eight. The Yellow Jackets’ offense was led by Charlotte Henderson, Mallory Hook, and Spence, who each had three hits. Peyton Sayers and Locklear each earned two hits. Kaylei Brady, Katelyn Leatherbury, and Dzurko had one hit apiece. Hook scored three runs. Henderson, Dzurko, and Saysers scored two runs. Brady, Lockler, Leatherbury, Heather Demarino, and Jayden Jenkins each scored one run. 

The same evening, the Northampton Yellow Jackets varsity baseball team hosted Surry County High School. The Yellow Jackets lost 15-0. 

Aron Price opened the game on the pitcher’s mound, walking four batters and striking out two. Charles Chapman, Porter Spence, and Stephen Matlack each pitched in relief. Matlack and Chapman each struck out one batter. Romano Onley led the Yellow Jackets offensively. Onley hit a single in the first inning.

Both the Yellow Jackets softball and baseball teams hosted another set of home games against the Arcadia Firebirds Thursday, April 7.
