Yellow Jackets and Ponies Split Victories in Double-Header

The Northampton Yellow Jackets girls varsity basketball team hosted the Chincoteague Ponies Thursday, Jan. 27. The Ponies defeated the Yellow Jackets 42-26. 

The Ponies established a 10-2 lead in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Yellow Jackets made a few defensive adjustments and placed more pressure on the Ponies’ offense. They forced a few turnovers that they turned into points. At halftime the Ponies led to 24-9. In the third quarter, the Ponies went on a 13-8 run that gave them a 20-point lead. In the fourth quarter, the Yellow Jackets offense stalled and suffered a few costly fouls that prevented them from capturing the victory. 

Later the same evening, the Yellow Jackets and Ponies boys varsity basketball teams faced each other. The Yellow Jackets won the matchup 85-60.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a fast start, seemingly scored at will. Their defense suffocated the Ponies’ offense and forced several turnovers. At halftime, the Yellow Jackets led 47-19. In the second half, the Yellow Jackets’ offense slowed down and momentum swung in the Ponies’ favor. Jake Harper appeared unstoppable, leading the Ponies on a 21-15 run. In the fourth quarter, the Yellow Jackets fought back and outscored the Ponies 23-20 to close out the game. 

Harper led the Ponies offense with 23 points, five rebounds, and two assists. Landon King had 23 points, 13 rebounds, and eight assists. Ronyell Coston led the Yellow Jackets’ offense with 19 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Ronrico Bugg earned 16 points, six rebounds, one assist, and four steals. Quayshawn Washinton had 15 points, six rebounds, three assists, and seven steals. 

The Yellow Jackets boys and girls basketball teams played again on Wednesday, Feb. 2. They hosted King and Queen Central High School. The girls lost 56-15 and the boys won 73-71. The following night, the Ponies boys and girls basketball teams traveled to Onley to face the Nandua Warriors.
