Mr. Delbert Lee Reed, 83, husband of Lula May Reed, of Sanford, very peacefully in his sleep went home to be with the Lord June 23, 2021, at his residence surrounded by his family.

Born April 6, 1938, on Chincoteague Island, he was the son of the late Grover Reed and the late Betsy Carpenter Reed.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, John Reed, of Pocomoke City, Md., Ronnie Reed, of Onancock, and Robert Reed, of Snow Hill, Md.

Delbert served as a duty soldier in the U.S. Army and was later granted an honorable discharge. He worked as a truck driver in his later years and was very proudly an active member of the American Legion for over 45 years. Delbert was a jack-of-all-trade and enjoyed woodworking, fishing, hunting, boating, and many other hobbies. An evening well spent for him was dining with the love of his life at home and listening to country music. Delbert and Lula were married for a happy 32 years. Mollie B. Polka was one of his favorite programs, along with the Grand Ole Opry and many others.

Other than his wife, he is survived by a son, Benny Reed, of Bloxom; a daughter, Maureen Cody, of Snow Hill; a stepdaughter, Lena Wood, of Sanford; a stepson, Charles Wood, of Pocomoke City; a stepdaughter, Mary Ann Chelton, of Melfa; a sister, Mary Snead, of Bloxom; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Delbert leaves behind a very devoted little friend in his stepgrandson, Travis Williams. Travis and Delbert were the best of buddies and always enjoyed spending time together – watching them together was truly a gift.

A graveside service was held Sunday, June 27, at 2 p.m., from the Downing’s Cemetery in Oak Hall, with Pastor Mary Jiminez officiating.

Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post 93, 2017 Bypass Road, Pocomoke City, MD 21851.

Arrangements are by the Thornton Funeral Home in Parksley.
