Mr. Robert “Bob” Lee Bowen went to Heaven to be with the Lord Jesus. He was born in Broadwater, Hog Island.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Anna K. Bowen; sons, John and Adam (Ann); sisters-in-law, Ann Carmichael (Al), Kimberly McBride (Richard), and Ann Adams (Roy); brothers-in-law, Charles Kello and Robert Kello (Suzanne); and many nieces and nephews. His sister, Marian Marshall, preceded him in death.
He was a country gentleman, an honest and moral man. He was a deacon at Kempsville Baptist Church. Captain Bob was an oyster farmer and co-founder of Bowen Oyster Co. He was an expert boat builder. One Christmas his parents gave him a wagon, which he removed the wheels and made it a boat. When Bob was out on the water with his boat, he could “read the sky” and tell when a storm was approaching, when others were oblivious. He raced go-carts, winning many trophies, and rode a Harley Davidson coast-to-coast. He and Anna helped with Disaster Relief through Southern Baptists. They led church nursing homes ministries, singing and playing guitar and piano (self taught), and shared faith in the Lord Jesus (who died and arose and gives eternal life to all who trust in Him). When God called him to go on mission trips, he answered His call and he went to Belize, Brazil, and Ukraine. He served in the Coast Guard, loved his country, and our freedoms.
