The Virginia High School League recently presented Richard Wilfong with its Regional Award of Merit for his administrative efforts during his career and as a member of Region 1A while working for Northampton High School.
In addition to his many accolades, Wilfong recently won his 100th game as a cross-country coach.
A Harrisonburg, Va., native, Wilfong came to Northampton High School in 1989 as assistant principal after an already successful coaching career elsewhere in the state.
He retired after 15 years as assistant principal and then taught horticulture part time for seven years. It was while teaching that Wilfong began coaching cross-country, compiling championship records for both boys and girls teams.
Wilfong returned to administration in 2010 as the school’s athletic director, a position he served in until his retirement last fall.
