Broadwater’s Gunnar Gustafson was named Virginia Independent Schools Football League 2021 Football Player of the Year. The senior was part of Broadwater’s first undefeated team in school history. He ran for 887 yards and averaged 14.5 yards per carry. Gustafson also added 396 receiving yards and finished the season with 22 touchdowns in just four games. The Vikings now have two Players of the Year in Gustafson and Clay Wardius, who was Metro Player of the Year for basketball, and six players on the all-state football team with Gustafson leading the way.

Gustafson made the first team for both running back and return specialist. Cole Celli made the first team for an outstanding season at tight end. Jonathan Graham made the offensive first team as an offensive lineman and for his work in the trenches. He was also given honorable mention for defensive lineman. Brant Bloxom landed on the second team, leading the Vikings at the quarterback position. Reade Nicholls and Wardius were the only players to land on the all-defensive team. Nicholls was recognized for outstanding play at the linebacker position and Wardius was recognized for outstanding play as a defensive end. Submitted photos.
