Mr. Denver Harvey “Denny” Mears, 81, of Chincoteague Island, passed away May 5, 2021, at his residence.

He was born on Chincoteague Island on March 13, 1940, a son to the late Harvey and Lillie (Bowden) Mears.

He was a member of Union Baptist Church and Ready Bible Class.  He was enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1959 until 1961.  He continued his service as a Coast Guard reservist until 1963. After his service in the Coast Guard, he went on to manage numerous contracts with his father, Harvey, at the NASA Wallops Station and NASA Wallops Flight Center. In 1978 he began a new career as a carpenter, working with several local contractors until he retired in 1998.

Denny is survived by his loving spouse of 61 years, Thelma Chase Mears, of Chincoteague Island; daughter, Michelle Stacey, and her husband, Jeff Stacey, of Henderson, Nev.; son, Denny Mears, and his wife, Angie, of Horntown; sister, Estelle Robinson, of Lexington, S.C.; brother, Delmas Mears, and his wife, Teresa, of Chincoteague Island; three grandchildren, Kylie Mears, Dustin Mears (wife, Brooke),  and Kyrstin Fierst (husband, Zach); great-granddaughter, Anastasia Fierst; and numerous nieces and nephews. His family and friends will miss his sense of humor and love of people.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 8, 2021, at 10 a.m., at Union Baptist Church, Chincoteague Island, with the Rev. Kevin Eley and the Rev. Maurice Enright officiating.

Burial will take place in the John W. Taylor Memorial Cemetery in Temperanceville.
