Mrs. Maria Elaina DeVasto, 62, of Chincoteague Island, passed away suddenly on Feb. 12, 2021.

She was born in Hastings On Hudson, N.Y., on Oct. 12, 1958, a daughter to the late Gaetano and Helen (Calbo) Rufo.

She will be remembered for her big heart, service to others, and being a devoted social worker. She was a kind, gentle, nurturing soul to all she encountered, from the very young to the very old.

Maria is survived by her loving spouse of 38 years, Peter DeVasto, of Chincoteague Island; two sons, Joseph DeVasto, of Kamuela, Hawaii, and Michael DeVasto and his wife, Danielle, of Grand Rapids, Mich.; three grandchildren, Lucy, Noelle, and Thomas DeVasto; sister, Gerri Holterman, of Middletown, N.Y.; sisters-in-law, Christine Gallagher and her husband, Thomas, of Yonkers, N.Y., and Sue Rufo, of Middletown; and a host of nieces and nephews, Ann, Artie, Madeline, Kevin, Denise, Kurt, Robert, Sarah H., Eric, Matthew, Sarah R., Beth, Cassandra, Elizabeth, Anna, Joseph, Rebecca, Owen, Helen, Jane, Willow, Damian, Kathryn, Andrew, and Claire.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Peter Rufo; brother-in-law, John Holterman; brother-in-law, John DeVasto Jr.; father-in-law, John DeVasto Sr.; and mother-in-law, Joan DeVasto.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Feb. 20, 2021, at 4 p.m., at Salyer Funeral Home Inc., Chincoteague Island, with the Rev. Maurice Enright officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SPCA, P.O. Box 164, Onley, VA 23418. Services were entrusted to Salyer Funeral Home, Inc. on Chincoteague Island.
