Mr. Charles Edwin “Sonny” Spencer, of Cape Charles, passed away April 30, 2020, at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital.
He was son of Margaret and R.E. Spencer, predeceased by his wife, Mary Ann, and is survived by his daughters, Sharon French, of Norfolk, Va., and Sue Mapp and husband, Tom, his grandchildren, Jake and Spencer Mapp, great-grandson, Gatlin Mapp, all of Franktown.
Known as Sonny to family and friends, he enlisted in the Air Force from 1951 to 1955, serving at Bentwaters Base in England. He married Mary Ann Gibbs, who moved to England to be with Sonny, and Sharon, their first daughter, was born there. Upon his discharge in 1955, he and his family settled again on the Eastern Shore. He worked many years at Cape Charles grocery stores, retiring at 62. Sonny enjoyed playing cards, working on clocks, growing tomatoes, and watching his grandsons play football and baseball. He loved his Washington Redskins and the New York Yankees. You would often find his beloved cat, PU, sitting in his lap while watching sports. After Mary Ann passed in 2005, Sonny and his daughters returned twice to England to relive many fond memories there. He spent his remaining years at his home on Monroe Avenue, the last four years with the help of caregiver, Helen Goffigon, who the family called an Angel from Heaven. Sonny was moved to the local nursing home mid-March and then to Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital where he spent the remainder of his life.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, May 5. Burial was private due to the coronavirus limits on public gatherings. He will be sorely missed.
