Dear Editor:

October was National Principals Month. It’s an opportunity to honor and celebrate principals in our communities. I’d like to recognize Principal Mike Myers for his hard work to promote Northampton High School’s Breakfast After the Bell program.

One in seven children in Virginia lives in fami-lies that struggle with hunger. We know Breakfast After the Bell, a program that increases access to school breakfast by making it a part of the school day, is a proven way to help end childhood hunger.

There are also academic benefits: Research indicates that eating breakfast at school helps children improve classroom performance, atten-dance and promotes healthy habits.

After Northampton High implemented a Breakfast After the Bell program in 2017, break-fast participation among free and reduced-price lunch eaters increased by 30 percent in a one-year period.

Principal Myers is a breakfast champion and his support of Northampton High’s Breakfast After the Bell program has ensured more high school students start their day ready to learn.
