By Linda Cicoira — A skull, believed to have belonged to a human child, was found in the surf Sunday on Metompkin Island by a resident who was walking along the beach.

Sheriff Todd Godwin said the skull was found “around lunchtime” and was brought to the police at about 2:30 p.m. The sheriff declined to identify the person who found it.

“There were no visual signs of trauma,” said Godwin. “No flesh on the skull. It could have come from an old cemetery. It was completely black,” which told Godwin it was old.

The skull was sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office, in Norfolk, so further study could be made.
