Flynn Vaults to New State Record and Third State Championship

The Northampton Yellow Jackets varsity indoor track team competed in the 2A VHSL Indoor State Tournament at Roanoke College Feb. 25 and 26 under the direction of Head Coach Oliver Bennett and pole vault coach Terry Flynn.

Senior Yellow Jacket Forest Flynn pole vaulted to his first indoor state title, and his third career championship, setting a new state record of 14-1.

Flynn was among four Yellow Jacket pole vaulters to compete at the state finals under pole vault coach Terry Flynn, with Tyrese Harris, who placed 15th, Alphonso Godwin, with a 16th-place finish, and Liam Flynn, earning 17th overall, all with jumps of 8-6.

Flynn earned his first state title in 2017 at the outdoor state meet with a vault of 11-6 and his second champtionship last June in Elkton, hitting a 13-3 mark in the outdoor pole vault finals, smashing the previous year’s record. Earlier this season, Flynn set a career best of 14-4 during the International Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev., held Jan. 19.

Sophomores JyAsia Savage finished fourth in the 55-meter dash. Tyrease Harris, also a sophomore, earned a seventh-place finish after battling back from an injury he suffered over the first hurdle of the 55-meter hurdle event, fighting through to complete the race.

Northampton also took a team of Shamar Johnson, Jaquan Langston, Kobe Lyons, and Harris, earning a 10th-place finish in the 4×200.
