By Linda Cicoira — The Eastern Shore Community College is undergoing a few changes.
There’s the reorganization of the school called a reboot that involved all the community colleges in the state and will mean a consolidation of resources, a decrease in administrative costs, and a drive to increase enrollment – all over the next three years.
Interim President Billy Greer is holding down the fort as the college continues its search for a new president after Linda Thomas-Glover left more than a year ago.
And the new main building is slated to open in late summer just in time for the fall term. Initially, construction was due to be completed in February, but weather prevented that from happening.
The new building will be filled with windows that will allow fantastic views of the campus. It has a grand staircase, lots of classrooms including labs for computers, chemistry, and biology.
“We certainly believe it’s going to get the attention of a lot of 18-year-olds,” Greer said, adding, the freshman can start in Melfa instead of going to a school with tens of thousands of students where they would get lost in the crowd.
An abundance of study rooms, a student center, a medical room, a large media center, and a bookstore are all included in the new building. There is even a recessed wall where a Willie Crockett painting will be placed while the view from the president’s office and many of the classrooms will show off the Turner sculpture that stands in the parking circle.
