Broadwater Academy’s wrestling team makes up in success what it lacks in numbers. The Viking’s sole wrestler, Grade 8 student William Wehner, is having an outstanding season, notching 23 wins against just three losses in his matches. Sixteen of his matches have ended in him pinning his opponent.
Wehner, who commonly wrestles against high school athletes, placed first in the 106-pound weight class against wrestlers from 11 other schools at the Mathew’s Invitational on Jan. 5 Going into the championship match, he had four wins and no losses for the day, but was facing another undefeated wrestler for the championship. He went on to defeat his opponent, 9-0, to win the gold medal.
The following week, he earned a silver medal at the Fred Diem/Scott Miles Round Robin Wrestling Tournament held at Northampton High School. Wehner won eight of his nine matches, six of them by pinning his opponents.
“William Wehner is an outstanding athlete with just the right mix of physical talent, technical know-how, and old-fashioned grit,” said Ron Anson, Broadwater Academy’s Athletic Director. “He has what it takes to be a great wrestler and he has a great future in the sport.”
Broadwater Academy wrestling will next compete in the Northumberland Varsity Tournament at Northumberland High School on Jan. 19.
