One brother died and another was seriously injured in a traffic crash early Thanksgiving morning in Accomac.
Billy Gene Padgett, 38, of Baylys Neck Road, was driving a 2012 Dodge Charger on Church Road, failed to negotiate a turn, and ran off the road and into an abandoned house at the at the edge of Front Street. The incident occurred at 2:08 a.m.
The passenger, Ray Phillip Padgett Jr., 44, also of Baylys Neck Road, died at the scene. Billy Padgett was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Sgt. Michelle Anaya of Virginia State Police said, “Speed was a contributing factor and it is unknown at this time if alcohol contributed to the cause of the accident.” The men were not wearing seatbelts, she added.
It was the fourth fatal crash in Accomack County in 2018. Five people died in those incidents. Northampton County has had two fatal crashes with two people killed in 2018.
Last year at this time, there were three fatal crashes with three people killed. Northampton figures were the same as this time last year.
Charges are pending for the latest fatal crash, police said.
